How Zone of Proximal Development (Vygotsky) works

Activities are scaffolded from supported practice to independent application with gradually fading support.

Phases of Zone of Proximal Development (Vygotsky)

1. Current Ability: Find out what participants can already do on their own, for example with a short task, poll or self-assessment at the start.
2. Scaffolded Challenge: Set a task just beyond that level and provide supports: worked examples, prompts, templates, or a more experienced partner.
3. Guided Practice: Let participants work on the task with the facilitator or peers coaching, and gradually reduce the support as they gain confidence.
4. Independent Mastery: Ask participants to perform a similar task without support, showing the skill is now within their own range.

Considerations

• Hard to pinpoint each person's zone in a group; use quick diagnostics and flexible support.
• Support that is not faded creates dependence.
• The term 'scaffolding' was introduced later by Wood, Bruner and Ross (1976), not by Vygotsky.
