Value Proposition Canvas

A framework designed to ensure a product or service is positioned around what the customer actually values and needs. It focuses on the 'fit' between the customer's requirements and the features of the solution.

When to use Value Proposition Canvas

Best used during the 'Analysis' phase of design to refine target audience profiles and ensure the solution addresses specific performance gaps.

How Value Proposition Canvas works

Instructional designers can use this to map learner needs (jobs, pains, gains) against the learning objectives and features of a training program to ensure high engagement and relevance.

Phases of Value Proposition Canvas

  1. Customer Profile: Customer Jobs: List what customers are trying to get done in work or life: functional, social and emotional jobs. Participants gather jobs from research or interviews onto the canvas.
  2. Customer Profile: Pains: Capture the bad outcomes, obstacles and risks customers face around their jobs. Teams rank pains by severity.
  3. Customer Profile: Gains: Capture the outcomes and benefits customers want, from required to unexpected. Teams rank gains by importance.
  4. Value Map: Products & Services: List the products and services the value proposition is built on. Participants focus on those that address the profile, not the full catalogue.
  5. Value Map: Pain Relievers: Describe how the products and services reduce specific customer pains. Teams link each pain reliever to a pain on the profile.
  6. Value Map: Gain Creators: Describe how the products and services produce customer gains. Teams link gain creators to gains, then check overall fit and what still needs testing.

Key principles

  • Problem-Solution Fit
  • Empathy-Driven Design
  • Evidence-Based Validation

Best for

  • User Research
  • Product-Market Fit
  • Learner Persona Development

Considerations

  • Must be validated with real user data rather than assumptions
  • Focuses on a specific segment rather than the whole business
