Synchronous Online Flipped Learning Approach (SOFLA®)

A specialized adaptation of flipped learning specifically designed for the synchronous online environment. It provides a structured sequence to ensure engagement and accountability in virtual classrooms.

When to use Synchronous Online Flipped Learning Approach (SOFLA®)

Best for remote or virtual instructor-led training (VILT) where 'Zoom fatigue' is a concern and high engagement is required.

How Synchronous Online Flipped Learning Approach (SOFLA®) works

Facilitators use this model to structure a live Zoom or Teams session, ensuring that the 'lecture' happens before the call and the live time is strictly reserved for collaborative tasks and feedback.

Phases of Synchronous Online Flipped Learning Approach (SOFLA®)

  1. Pre-work: Learners complete asynchronous work before the live class, such as a video, reading or short task. The facilitator designs it so the live session can go straight to application.
  2. Sign-in Activity: As people arrive, they do a short task that draws on the pre-work and asks them to apply it or relate it to their own needs. It gets everyone active from the first minute.
  3. Whole Group Application: The whole class works together on an activity that checks and deepens the pre-work, clarifying what was missed. The facilitator leads, questions and corrects misunderstandings.
  4. Breakout Rooms: Learners move to small online breakout rooms to work as a team on a structured task with a clear product. The facilitator visits rooms to guide and listen.
  5. Share-out: Groups return to the main room and present their products or findings. The facilitator connects the outputs and gives feedback.
  6. Preview and Wrap-up: The facilitator previews the next topic, explains the follow-up assignment and closes with a short reflection on what was learned. This sets up the next cycle of pre-work.

Key principles

  • Structured transition from individual to social learning
  • Immediate application of pre-session concepts
  • Consistent use of breakout groups for peer-to-peer interaction

Best for

  • Virtual Instructor-Led Training (VILT)
  • Remote higher education
  • Online professional development

Considerations

  • Requires robust digital platforms with breakout room capabilities
  • Facilitators must be proficient in managing multiple digital tools simultaneously
