Seek > Sense > Share (Personal Knowledge Mastery)

A continuous process framework for Personal Knowledge Mastery (PKM) that enables individuals to take control of their professional development in a networked era. It shifts the focus from static knowledge 'stock' to dynamic knowledge 'flow' by connecting individual learning with social networks and organizational work.

When to use Seek > Sense > Share (Personal Knowledge Mastery)

Most effective for professional development, self-directed learning initiatives, and organizations looking to foster innovation and agility in complex environments.

How Seek > Sense > Share (Personal Knowledge Mastery) works

Instructional designers can use this to move beyond one-off events toward continuous learning journeys. Design programs that require participants to curate external content (Seek), apply insights to real-world projects with reflective journaling (Sense), and narrate their progress in social learning spaces (Share).

Phases of Seek > Sense > Share (Personal Knowledge Mastery)

  1. Seek: Finding information and keeping up to date by building a diverse network of trusted sources and curators.: Seeking means building and filtering a diverse network of sources and people. In a session, participants map their current sources, spot gaps and choose new ones to follow.
  2. Sense: Personalizing and internalizing information through reflection, experimentation, and putting theory into practice.: Sensing means making information your own by reflecting, writing and trying things out. Participants summarise, connect ideas or run a small experiment, and discuss what they concluded.
  3. Share: Exchanging resources, ideas, and experiences with networks and colleagues to foster collaboration and innovation.: Sharing means passing on resources, ideas and experiences, at the right time and to the right people. Participants post insights, teach a peer or contribute to a team channel, and agree on sharing habits.

Key principles

  • Knowledge is a flow, not a static asset to be stored
  • Learning is the work and work is learning
  • Chance favors the connected mind
  • Personal knowledge is individually constructed and socially shared
  • Working out loud makes implicit knowledge explicit

Best for

  • Self-directed professional development
  • Social and collaborative learning
  • Knowledge management
  • Innovation and complex problem solving

Considerations

  • Requires high levels of learner autonomy and digital literacy
  • Relies on the existence of trusted social networks and communities of practice
  • Difficult to measure using traditional compliance-based metrics
  • Requires a culture that supports 'working out loud' and transparency
