ROPES Model

A five-part lesson-planning structure: Review, Overview, Presentation, Exercise, Summary. It gives trainers a simple, repeatable plan for each module that links new content to prior knowledge and makes room for practice.

When to use ROPES Model

Structured skills or knowledge training where content is defined in advance, especially when writing lesson plans for a multi-module course.

How ROPES Model works

Your session reviews context, presents content, exercises skills, and summarizes learning.

Phases of ROPES Model

  1. Review: Link the new topic to what participants already know, for example by asking about their experience with it. This activates prior knowledge and shows the facilitator where the group stands.
  2. Overview: Preview the objectives, why they matter and what the session will cover. Participants know where they are heading and why.
  3. Presentation: Describe, discuss and demonstrate the new content, with examples. Keep it short and interactive.
  4. Exercise: Let participants practise and apply the content, with the facilitator giving feedback and answering questions.
  5. Summary: Review the key points, invite questions and check what was learned. Close by linking to what comes next.

Key principles

  • Connect to prior knowledge first
  • Make objectives explicit
  • Practice is the core of the lesson
  • Close by consolidating

Best for

  • Classroom and technical training
  • Train-the-trainer programmes
  • Modular courses
  • New trainers writing lesson plans

Considerations

  • Presenter-centred: easy to let Presentation take over at the expense of Exercise.
  • Less suited to open or co-creative sessions where content emerges from the group.
  • Origin of the model is not well documented.
