The Gentle Art of Reperceiving

A cognitive framework designed to shift the 'mental maps' of decision-makers by aligning external environmental scanning with internal intent and competitive positioning. It emphasizes that seeing the future is a skill of awareness that must be cultivated over a career rather than a one-time exercise.

When to use The Gentle Art of Reperceiving

When an organization needs to align its internal culture and strategic intent with a rapidly changing external landscape.

How The Gentle Art of Reperceiving works

Instructional designers can use this to bridge the gap between 'learning' about the world and 'acting' within it, ensuring that scenario exercises lead directly to an examination of the organization's core purpose and competitive edge.

Phases of The Gentle Art of Reperceiving

  1. Study of the business environment (Scenarios): Decision-makers build scenarios of the external environment to see predetermined elements and critical uncertainties. Workshop groups explore driving forces and draft plausible, contrasting futures.
  2. Rigorous and intuitive examination of intent: Leaders test what the organisation really wants and stands for, using both analysis and gut feeling. The facilitator asks participants to hold their intent against each scenario.
  3. Analysis of competitive advantage: The organisation examines what gives it a lasting edge and how that holds up in each scenario. Groups assess strengths and vulnerabilities per future.
  4. Evaluation of strategic options: Options are tested against the scenarios, intent and competitive position to choose robust moves. Participants rate options across futures and discuss how their mental maps have shifted.

Key principles

  • Alignment of external reality with internal intent
  • Continuous cultivation of collective awareness
  • Intuitive and rigorous self-examination
  • Integration of foresight with Michael Porter-style competitive advantage

Best for

  • Executive Coaching
  • Cultural Transformation
  • Advanced Strategic Alignment

Considerations

  • Highly dependent on the quality of internal 'remarkable people' and their insights
  • Requires a shift from 'getting things done' to 'seeing ahead'
  • Often fails if treated as a standalone workshop rather than a career-long discipline
