How Critical Pedagogy (Freire) works

Participants examine systemic issues through dialogue and plan concrete actions for change.

Phases of Critical Pedagogy (Freire)

1. Problem-Posing: Start from real problems in participants' own lives, often presented as a code: a picture, story or situation that the group recognises. The facilitator asks questions rather than giving answers.
2. Dialogue: Participants and facilitator explore the problem as co-learners, bringing their own knowledge and experience. Everyone's view counts.
3. Conscientization: Through dialogue, the group analyses the social, economic or power structures behind the problem and becomes critically aware of them.
4. Praxis (Action-Reflection): The group plans and takes action to change the situation, then reflects on that action and starts again. Learning and action feed each other.

Considerations

• Requires facilitators to share power; hard to do inside strongly hierarchical settings.

• The four phases are a synthesis of Freire's concepts, not a sequence he prescribed.
