ARCS Model (Keller)

The ARCS model is a framework for designing motivation into instruction, built on four categories: Attention, Relevance, Confidence and Satisfaction. It also offers a systematic process for analysing an audience's motivation and choosing tactics to address gaps.

When to use ARCS Model (Keller)

Use it when motivation is a risk, such as mandatory training, technical content, online learning or reluctant audiences.

How ARCS Model (Keller) works

Your session grabs attention, shows relevance, builds confidence, and provides satisfaction.

Phases of ARCS Model (Keller)

  1. Attention: Capture and sustain interest through variety, curiosity and questions that create a knowledge gap. Change pace and format regularly to keep focus.
  2. Relevance: Show how the content connects to participants' goals, work and past experience. Use their examples and make the benefit explicit.
  3. Confidence: Make success achievable: state clear criteria, sequence challenges from easy to hard, and let people attribute success to their own effort.
  4. Satisfaction: Let participants use their new skills in meaningful situations and give recognition and fair feedback. Satisfaction makes them want to keep learning.

Key principles

  • Motivation can be designed
  • Arouse and sustain curiosity
  • Connect to learners' goals
  • Build expectations of success
  • Reward and recognise learning

Best for

  • Mandatory or compliance training
  • E-learning design
  • Technical topics
  • Reviewing why a session falls flat

Considerations

  • Addresses motivation only; pair it with a model for content sequencing.
  • Tactics must fit the audience; what grabs one group may irritate another.
  • Keller's full process includes audience analysis, which is often skipped in practice.
