5E Instructional Model

The BSCS 5E Instructional Model is an inquiry-based sequence of five phases: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate. It lets learners experience a phenomenon before it is explained, which helps them build and revise their own understanding.

When to use 5E Instructional Model

Use it when you want participants to understand a concept deeply rather than just receive it, especially for topics where people hold existing misconceptions.

How 5E Instructional Model works

Participants move through engagement, exploration, explanation, elaboration, and evaluation.

Phases of 5E Instructional Model

  1. Engage: Spark curiosity with a question, problem or surprising observation, and surface what participants already think. Misconceptions that come up here are useful material for later.
  2. Explore: Let participants investigate the topic hands-on, in pairs or small groups, before any formal explanation. The facilitator observes and asks questions rather than giving answers.
  3. Explain: Participants share what they found, and the facilitator introduces the formal concepts and vocabulary that make sense of it. This is where misconceptions are addressed directly.
  4. Elaborate: Participants apply the new understanding to a new situation or a harder problem. This extends and tests the concept in a different context.
  5. Evaluate: Check understanding through observation, questions, a short task or self-assessment. Evaluation can also happen informally throughout the other phases.
