4MAT System

The 4MAT System is a learning cycle that moves through four questions: Why, What, How and What If. Each quarter of the cycle serves a different way people engage with learning, so a full cycle gives every participant an entry point while moving the group from meaning to application.

When to use 4MAT System

Use it when designing a session for a mixed group and you want a simple, complete arc from motivation through content to application.

Activities address why this matters, what to learn, how to apply it, and what if scenarios.

Phases of 4MAT System

  1. Why?: Open by connecting the topic to participants' own experiences and values, for example through a story, a shared experience or a question about what matters to them. The aim is personal meaning before any content arrives.
  2. What?: Present the core concepts, models and facts clearly and in an organised way. Participants get the expert knowledge that the opening made them curious about.
  3. How?: Let participants practise and apply the concepts through exercises, trials and problem solving. The facilitator coaches while people test what works.
  4. If?: Ask participants to adapt and extend what they learned to their own situations and new possibilities. Close with commitments, refinements or creative applications.

Considerations

  • The model is linked to learning-style typing; evidence that matching teaching to individual learning styles improves learning is weak.
  • Use the cycle for sequence and variety, not to label participants as types.
  • The Why phase can feel slow for groups who already see the relevance; keep it short in that case.
